To resolve common refractive errors that cause blurry vision, you should get a routine eye exam to alleviate problems resulting from these common conditions which affect millions of patients in the US. These conditions can also get worse as you age, but they can be easily treated with glasses, contacts, lens implants, and surgery for clearer vision at any distance. Some common eye conditions include:
Glaucoma occurs when pressure inside the eye is heightened which damages the optic nerve to ultimately cause vision loss. As the leading cause of blindness in the US, glaucoma develops slowly over several years and may go unnoticed with an absence of painful or noticeable symptoms. A less common type of glaucoma is angle closure glaucoma which can cause eye redness, halos around lights, and pain which makes it a medical emergency.
The most commonly seen type of glaucoma is primary angle glaucoma which causes no symptoms until the advanced stages. It is important to treat glaucoma early to prevent the eye from going completely blind because once too much damage is done, it cannot be reversed.
Those who are at a higher risk for glaucoma include people who are diabetic, over 40 years of age, African Americans, or people with a family history of glaucoma. Our doctors will offer comprehensive exams to detect glaucoma; they will check your optic nerve visual field, and the pressure in your eye to monitor any changes in your eyesight which may point to glaucoma.
If diagnosed early enough, glaucoma can be managed and treated with non-surgical methods such as prescription eye drops or laser therapy to lower the pressure in the eye. Surgery is also an option.
Macular degeneration is another term for vision loss. The macula is located in the back of the eye and is the part of the retina that ensures we have sharp and clear vision. When the arteries that usually nourish the retina harden, the retinal tissues which are deprived of nutrients start to weaken and die. This leads to vision loss called age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Patients may experience blurry, distorted, or gray areas and even blind spots in the center of their vision.
Macular degeneration does not affect peripheral vision and does not cause total blindness. Risk factors for this condition include diet, age, smoking, and exposure to sunlight. Having a regular eye exam can help to detect macular degeneration early enough to effectively treat it and prevent permanent vision loss. Symptoms include:
